Dispensary Near Haight-Ashbury
Our mission at Flore goes beyond top-quality cannabis. Our business is rooted in compassion, and our homebase of San Francisco has played a pivotal role in shaping cannabis legislation. In 1991, San Francisco residents approved Proposition P in support of the medical use of cannabis. In 1992, a bill was passed which allowed for the distribution of medical cannabis throughout the city, culminating in the first public cannabis dispensary, The San Francisco Cannabis Buyers Club which opened in 1994. Just two years later in 1996, California became the first state to legalize medical cannabis. In the same year, the founder of Flore Dispensary, Terrance Alan, opened one of the first Prop 215 medical cannabis dispensaries in Castro called CHAMP. Now decades later, Prop 64 allowed for the opening of Flore Dispensary.
There’s so much to see and do in our beloved city – cannabis history is just one of the many facets of our vibrant and diverse urban landscape. From the funky streets of The Castro to the modern, soaring lofts of SoMa and Latino roots and old school taquerias of the Mission District, there’s a reason SF was named one of the “world’s best cities”. Sites like the iconic Golden Gate Bridge, the scenic, winding Lombard Street and the emblematic corner of Haight and Ashbury Streets have become synonymous with San Francisco’s allure in popular culture. Visitors can take a walk down Ashbury Street, the epicenter of the Summer of Love, and see the homes of The Grateful Dead, Janis Joplin and Jefferson Airplane. In fact, The Haight is conveniently located close to Flore Dispensary, so it’s a great place to start your day exploring the lively streets of San Francisco and the quirky shopping district that is Haight-Ashbury.

We Love Haight-Ashbury
At Flore, we’re proud to serve the vibrant neighborhood of Haight-Ashbury. The rich cultural history of San Francisco is one of the reasons we’re so excited to call it our homebase. We love The Haight and its eclectic streets and colorful Victorian-era homes. Most of all, we love the people that truly make our San Francisco neighborhoods what they are today. Grab your choice of our Humboldt-grown, top quality cannabis products at Flore Dispensary and take a walk to the nearby Haight-Ashbury neighborhood where you can explore famed popular culture landmarks.
At 710 Ashbury Street you’ll find what’s known as the Grateful Dead House. This purple Victorian was where Jerry Garcia and his bandmates resided and hosted parties during the Summer of Love, making the location a cultural landmark in the neighborhood. The house is also relevant to San Francisco’s cannabis history; Jerry held a press conference at this location arguing for decriminalization of marijuana after he and his bandmates were arrested in a drug bust in 1967. Though it’s home to someone else today, visitors can stop by and take photos and enjoy the Dead Head art along the sidewalk.
To truly get a finger on the pulse of the Haight, make a trip to Hippy Hill located between the Conservatory of Flowers and Haight Street. The hill, located on the eastern end of Golden Gate Park, commemorates the years surrounding the Summer of Love, when the hill was a main hangout for the Haight’s residents. These days, visitors can
Aside from the Grateful Dead, a number of famous artists have claimed Haight-Ashbury as home, including Janis Joplin, Jefferson Airplane, and Jimi Hendrix – to name a few. Take a self-guided walking tour of the Grateful Dead House to Janis’ old residence at 635 Ashbury Street, then down a bit further to The Jimi Hendrix Red House at 1524 Ashbury Street. The colorful Victorians aren’t the only sites to see during your walk. There are tons of funky vintage shops, boutiques and restaurants along the way that effectively translate the hippie vibe of The Haight.
Another can’t-miss location is Buena Vista Park. It’s the oldest official park in San Francisco, established in 1867 as Hill Park, and later renamed Buena Vista. The park is on a steep hill that peaks at 575 feet and covers 37 acres, with the lowest section on the north end along Haight Street. A small lawn sits at the peak of the park and offers an area to rest and enjoy the sweeping views. The most notable views are available from various lookouts, including what is known as “The Window,” an overlook on the western side of the hill that offers a brilliant view of Golden Gate Park, the Pacific Ocean, and on very clear days, the white cliffs of Drake’s Bay.
A visit to Haight-Ashbury wouldn’t be complete without a stop at the corner of Haight and Ashbury. The National Trust for Historic Places declared the corner a “national treasure” and recognizes that the neighborhood’s role in the Summer of Love was critical to 20th century history in the United States. Our founder, Terrance Alan, has personally taken part in crucial moments in history from work with the LGBTQ+ community to his work as a legacy cannabis advocate and dispensary owner. In the 1980’s, Terrance was living in San Francisco and devoting much of his time to helping the gay community, including those suffering from AIDS. In providing compassionate cannabis, sick patients were able to improve debilitating symptoms associated with the disease. San Francisco is foundational to eras that catapulted cannabis into the national spotlight and paved the way for movements that led us to where we are today.
Whether you’re just visiting San Francisco or you’re a born and raised local, a trip to The Haight is filled with sites and scenery to be enjoyed and experienced. There’s nothing quite like the pairing of the highest quality cannabis in Northern California and a leisurely stroll down two of the most famous streets in America – Haight and Ashbury. At Flore, we’re happy to guide the way.
