The cannabis holiday of 420 has its roots in the counterculture movement of the 1960s. It began as a code used by cannabis smokers to communicate with each other, and eventually evolved into a full-fledged holiday celebrated by cannabis enthusiasts around the world.
There are many theories about how 420 came to be, but the most popular one is that it originated with a group of high school students in California in the 1970s. These students would meet at 4:20 pm to smoke cannabis, and the term eventually spread among cannabis users.
Nowadays, 420 is celebrated on April 20th every year, with cannabis smokers gathering to enjoy their favorite herb. It’s also become a day for raising awareness about cannabis legalization, and many cannabis events and protests are held on this day.

Celebrate our 420 Mural Unveiling
The mural on the side of our building in Castro is a tribute to compassionate cannabis and legacy Humboldt farmers. The design by Dave Van Patten tells the story of how these farmers would donate 10-20% of their crop to CHAMP or other cannabis co-ops in San Francisco, allowing patients to receive the medicine they otherwise couldn’t afford. The mural is a reminder of the importance of cannabis in our community, and the role that everyone can play in ensuring that everyone has access to this vital medication.
The mural has been named the first stop on The Cannabis Trail, which honors the pioneers, places and significant historical moments that paved the way for the legal cannabis access we have today.
